Bartell Drugs To Help Give “Bear Hugs”

Bartell Drugs is helping to give “bear hugs” to children in stressful or traumatic situations as the Puget Sound area drugstore chain teams up again with Warm 106.9 FM in the annual “Teddy Bear Patrol” campaign, now through March 30.

All 58 Bartell Drugs locations including:

  • Bartell Drugs – Mill Creek  18001 Bothell-Everett Hwy in Bothell
  • Bartell Drugs – Silver Lake  11020 19th Ave SE in Everett.

are designated locations for teddy bear donations. The annual drive puts teddy bears in the hands of community police departments, hospitals & emergency response teams so they may give the bears to children involved in challenging situations.

Over 74,000 bears have been collected over the past several years for this great cause. Do tell.

Donation options at Bartell Drugs stores in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties include:

  1. Purchase an official “Bartell  Bear” for $7.00 to keep or donate & Bartell Drugs will donate a second Bear to the campaign. [Win-win in my book!]

May the Force Be With You . . . for Nate’s Little Angel

On February 23, from 4-7PM,  members of the 501st Legion – Garrison Titan Star Wars Premier Charity Organization will be at Gold Creek Church along with members of The Rebel Legion’s Alpha Base to raise funds for Nate’s Little Angel, a Seizure Assist Dog.

This family is fantastic & Nate’s mom is the School Counselor at Forest View Elementary, where she does amazing things to help the students every day.  This is a way we as a community, can give back!

Get photos taken with your favorite Star Wars characters. Enjoy games, food, bouncy houses & much more! Feel free to come dressed as your favorite Star Wars character, too! Do tell.

Clearwater School to Host Parents’ Forum

What: Reluctant to Enthusiastic: A Clearwater Parents’ Forum

Parents at the Clearwater School in Bothell grapple with thorny issues resulting from sending their children to a democratic school. Providing their children with the freedom to be responsible for their own learning can be a daunting endeavor. Parents will discuss issues such as unlimited gaming, learning the fundamentals, how their kids are doing at Clearwater vs. traditional school, and how they themselves handle their difficulties with giving young people control of their lives.

In a radical departure from traditional schooling, Clearwater considers students responsible for their own education. Students choose what they want to do, when they want to do it and with whom and in ways that… serve them best.

Given the freedom to pursue their passions and the infrastructure to take responsibility for their lives, Clearwater students become confident, articulate adults with the skills they need to succeed. They graduate, get jobs, attend college, all without GPAs, transcripts or other stamps of approval that more traditional schools require. Do tell.

Open House – Discuss Plans for Seattle Hill Road

Snohomish County Public Works will host an Open House to discuss plans to widen nearly two miles of Seattle Hill Road from 35th Avenue to 132nd Street. The public meeting is scheduled for 6-8PM on Thursday, Feb 28th at Mill Creek Elementary School – 3400 148th St. SE Mill Creek,Wa 98012. SCPW staff will be on hand to explain the plans & answer questions.

The plan calls for adding a third lane – a center turn lane, as well as bike lanes, curbs & sidewalks. Snohomish County Public Works staff will coordinate improvements with the City of Mill Creek as Seattle Hill Road is next to Mill Creek’s high density urban village zone.

The project is still in the research, design, funding phase & no date for work has been scheduled, although the SCPW newsletter states: “If construction funds are secured, public works could advertise the project for competitive bid in 2017.”  Do tell.

Charity Fit Camp – Benefit Boys & Girls Clubs

Run 2 Be Fit is presenting a Charity Fit Camp on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 8:30AM at the Everett Boys & Girls Club —  2316 12th Street in Everett.

This is a self-defense & combat style camp, which is FREE.  But, please bring cash donations to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of Snohomish County. All proceeds from the Fit Camp benefit the Everett Boys & Girls Club. This event is open to all – males & females. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by guardian. Waivers will be signed by all.

Over the years, Boys & Girls Clubs have been a “home” to many amazing children who have grown to be productive, caring, responsible adults. Their goal is to continue this tradition of making a difference in our community. They offer many sports, educational programs, recreational games & teen programs for members ages 5-18. Do tell.

Following the workout there will be a DEMO for Damsel in Defense. Damsel in Defense is about equipping women with the tools to not only keep them safe but also to give them confidence to know that they have a way out if they ever feel threatened. They offer “affordable & adorable products” & education to help women keep safe.

Feb 5th Mill Creek Council Meeting Canceled

The February 5, 2013 regular meeting of the Mill Creek Council has been canceled.  The next regularly-scheduled meeting of the Council is Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Relay For Life Mill Creek Team Kick-Off 1/23/13

rfl3_RGBLooking to build upon Mill Creek’s successful American Cancer Society Relay for Life event last summer, planning is underway to grow participation to 35 teams and donations to exceed $60,000 this year.  Interested members of the greater Mill Creek community are invited to attend the kick-off meeting at 7:00 pm, Wednesday, January 23 at the former Zen Garden Restaurant at 16300 Mill Creek Blvd.

Relay for Life is a team-oriented event to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who have been lost to cancer, honor those who are fighting cancer & fight back by raising funds for cancer research & for local cancer support programs.  Teams take turns walking around the track throughout the night, representing the reality that cancer never sleeps.  This year, Mill Creek’s event will be held June 1, 2013 at McCollum Park.

The kick-off meeting on Jan 23 is the right time to come find out more about the event, sign up to form a team or volunteer to help organize & promote the event.  This event is a great way to unite with people in our community who have been affected by cancer, and to use your passion to save lives & create a world with more birthdays. Happy New Year!

January 2013. We settle into the new year & begin to unwind from the holiday crazies. After about two days though,  I start to think okay, now what? I’m not one to make New Year’s Resolutions, but I start thinking about projects. The holidays are over; the weather is good for staying indoors. Might as well start or finish a project.

A good place to start, is putting those Christmas decorations away. This year I resolved to not only throw them back in the closet (Did I just say that?), but actually take everything & I mean everything out of the closet & cull through it.   Cull ( kul) v.  to pick out, select, sort, gather with the intent to remove from the rest.

So I went through everything once I got it out into the hall. Oh my, how did all this stuff fit in there? I sorted into four piles. 1. garbage 2. recycle bin 3. Goodwill 4. keep.

It took the better part of the day, but I wound up with one big bag for the garbage, the equivalent of 2 bags for recycling – old papers, box materials, plastic, glass, etc. – & 4 bags for Goodwill. This included items from the Christmas decorations category. Yay! And rest assured there was some to keep, which I carefully put back all organized. Pat self on back.

Goodwill has a drop-off donation site up 164th St towards Martha Lake. Address is 710 164th St. SW  Lynnwood, WA 98087  to be exact & Hours are Mon- Sun, 9:00 AM -7:00 Pm. They are closed Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

They accept all quality reusable clothing & household items, including furniture.
And really helpful they accept ALL electronics including televisions & computer monitors measuring 19 inches or less, desktop computers and laptops.

The cannot take large appliances &  Goodwill never accepts hazardous, poisonous or flammable material or items containing them. Also, Goodwill cannot accept any  items that have been recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). If you are not sure about an item visit www. cpsc.gov for a current list of recalls. It was real easy with a one way drive-in & out. When I got there a young man was outside ready to help unload the trunk. Donation receipts are available if you would like.

Mill Creek Announces New City Manager

At the November 12, 2012 Special Meeting of the Council, Ken Armstrong was appointed as the City of Mill Creek’s new City Manager.  Ken will begin work on December 3, 2012.

 Ken Armstrong is currently Director of Security, Emergency Management and Safety for Seattle Public Utilities.  His previous positions with the City of Seattle include Administrator of the regional Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County and Director of Solid Waste at Seattle Public Utilities.  As the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program’s first Administrator, Ken guided the program through a comprehensive internal performance review and strategic planning process, which led to measurably increased efficiencies and improved service delivery.  Under Ken’s leadership, Seattle’s Solid Waste Division improved the quality of its services while reducing its operating costs.

Ken, a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, served 22 years in the U.S. Coast Guard.  His Coast Guard career included two command assignments – Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station South Caicos, BWI, and Commanding Officer Coast Guard Cutter Baranof.  Mid-way through his Coast Guard career, Ken attended the University of Washington’s Graduate School of Public Affairs, where he also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Quantitative Analysis.  Subsequent assignments included serving as Administrative Services Director for the Coast Guard’s 13th (Pacific Northwest) District.  Ken’s responsibilities included implementing the region’s annual $20M operating budget, monitoring annual budget performance and overseeing the region’s human resources functions.  Ken also served as the regional Coast Guard Congressional Affairs/Government Relations Officer, establishing strong relationships with local, state and congressional offices.  In this capacity, Ken played an important role in resolving numerous highly complex and sensitive incidents such as the grounding of the motor vessel New Carissa on the south Oregon coast and its subsequent oil spill; resumption of whaling by the Makah tribe; and tanker and merchant vessel safety in Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  Earlier in his career, Ken was selected as the sole Coast Guard representative on two U.S. State Department delegations – one to the People’s Republic of China and one to Japan. Do tell.

Ken and his wife Susan reside in Edmonds, Washington.

Don’t forget! On Sunday — November 11, 2012 at 12:00 Noon, The City of Mill Creek will sponsor a Veterans Day Ceremony at the Veterans Monument located in Library Park at 15429 Bothell Everett Highway Mill Creek, WA 98012

The Veterans Monument is located in Library Park adjacent to the Mill Creek Library and across Bothell Everett Highway from Mill Creek Town Center.  Parking is available in the Library parking lot. Do tell.
