Mill Creek Announces New City Manager

At the November 12, 2012 Special Meeting of the Council, Ken Armstrong was appointed as the City of Mill Creek’s new City Manager.  Ken will begin work on December 3, 2012.

Ken Armstrong is currently Director of Security, Emergency Management and Safety for Seattle Public Utilities.  His previous positions with the City of Seattle include Administrator of the regional Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County and Director of Solid Waste at Seattle Public Utilities.  As the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program’s first Administrator, Ken guided the program through a comprehensive internal performance review and strategic planning process, which led to measurably increased efficiencies and improved service delivery.  Under Ken’s leadership, Seattle’s Solid Waste Division improved the quality of its services while reducing its operating costs.

Ken, a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy, served 22 years in the U.S. Coast Guard.  His Coast Guard career included two command assignments – Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station South Caicos, BWI, and Commanding Officer Coast Guard Cutter Baranof.  Mid-way through his Coast Guard career, Ken attended the University of Washington’s Graduate School of Public Affairs, where he also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Quantitative Analysis.  Subsequent assignments included serving as Administrative Services Director for the Coast Guard’s 13th (Pacific Northwest) District.  Ken’s responsibilities included implementing the region’s annual $20M operating budget, monitoring annual budget performance and overseeing the region’s human resources functions.  Ken also served as the regional Coast Guard Congressional Affairs/Government Relations Officer, establishing strong relationships with local, state and congressional offices.  In this capacity, Ken played an important role in resolving numerous highly complex and sensitive incidents such as the grounding of the motor vessel New Carissa on the south Oregon coast and its subsequent oil spill; resumption of whaling by the Makah tribe; and tanker and merchant vessel safety in Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.  Earlier in his career, Ken was selected as the sole Coast Guard representative on two U.S. State Department delegations – one to the People’s Republic of China and one to Japan. Do tell.

Ken and his wife Susan reside in Edmonds, Washington.

The City welcomes Ken and wishes him success in his new position. And a big Welcome and Best Wishes from Do Tell Mill Creek, as well!

Coins For Kids Collected @ Mill Creek Merchants

Clothes For Kids Expands Their Coins For Kids Program to Mill Creek

For more than a decade, Clothes for Kids has partnered with schools in the Edmonds School District for its Coins For Kids program. In the last 6 years alone, these Coins For Kids drives have raised more than $175,000 in support of the Clothes For Kids mission to provide back to school wardrobes to eligible Snohomish County school children. This year, Clothes for Kids is excited to extend this very successful program to merchant associations around Snohomish County. Do tell.

The first business community to partner with Clothes For Kids is Mill Creek, led by Kaitlyn Durham from Celsius Salon. Durham says, “The beauty of this drive is its simplicity. Instead of putting your change in your pocket or wallet – add it to the other coins & help Clothes For Kids fulfill their mission.”

The need has never been greater. In the first 43 three days of back to school shopping this year, Clothes For Kids provided school wardrobes to 2,338 children from all over the county for a total of 47,000 pieces of clothing. This represents a 20% increase over the same time period in 2011. With the support of the community, Clothes For Kids can continue to meet the growing demands for our resources.

Look for the Coins For Kids canisters at the following Mill Creek merchants throughout the month of November:

  • Run 26
  • Bella Cleaners
  • Celsius Salon
  • Z Ultimate Defense Studios
  • Reigning Imagination Toys

Since 1984, Clothes for Kids has enhanced the learning environment by meeting the clothing needs of low-income children in Snohomish County. These services are provided to children in the community so they may arrive at school, ready to learn.

If your community is ready to take part in the Coins For Kids drives, please contact the office at 425-741-6500.

For more information please visit www.clothesforkids.org  to discover other ways you can become involved in transforming the lives of Snohomish County school children.

WSU Extension Master Gardener Program

Did you know that the WSU-Snohomish County Extension Master Gardener Program located right in Mill Creek’s backyard at McCollum Park trains new Master Gardeners every year, once a year, during the Winter? Whoo, that was a long sentence.

First, what is a Master Gardener & what do they do? Washington State University Master Gardeners are trained community educators – specialists in gardening & environmental stewardship. They operate Plant Problem Clinics, and they maintain three Demonstration Gardens: in Marysville, at Extension offices at McCollum Park & at the perennial border at the Evergreen Arboretum at Legion Park. They also conduct workshops, provide speakers, work with youth groups & provide mentors & educators through the Growing Groceries Program, the Natural Yard Care Program & the Rain Garden Program.

So, are you interested in becoming a Master Gardener? Training includes 80 hours of classroom & workshop instruction one day a week – on Thursdays – for three months, from January through March, as well as online instruction using “your” home computer. Tuition for this training is $245 which covers direct costs, materials & online training fees, plus a volunteer commitment of 50 hours each year for two years working in the various Master Garderner programs. If your work schedule does not permit you to make the volunteer commitment, you would be looking at tuition of $745. Obviously, this is something an applicant would have to be passionate about & to be in a position to fully commit to the training program. Do tell.

Applications are available at the Extension office & from the website now. The deadline for applications to be received by the office is November 2, 2012 for the class beginning in January 2013.

For more information about the Master Gardener Program regarding the training,  Plant Problem Clinics, the Demonstration Gardens, any of the other educational outreach work they do & the Snohomish County Master Gardener Foundation check out their website at  http://snohomish.wsu.edu

Lombardi’s to Open Sept 12

The new Lombardi’s Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar opens this Wednesday, September 12th in Mill Creek, WA on the Bothell-Everett Highway. Fans of the former Ballard restaurant will be happy to know that favorite dishes like Saltimboca, Tortellini Gorgonzola & Veal Picatta will be served at the new location. The new restaurant features an open kitchen with a hearth stone oven & will serve up Neapolitan-inspired pizzas like the Toscana — sun-dried tomatoes, kalamata olives, goat cheese, olive oil & fresh basil.

As always, Lombardi’s will have an extensive list of wines by the glass — 18 to be exact! — as well as cask wines & wine flights that will show off great wines such as Rocca delle Macie’s Chianti Classico or Haystack Needle’s Syrah. The bar will also feature local spirits like Woodinville Whiskey, Sun Liquor & Bainbridge Organic in specialty cocktails such as the “Local Long Island” — featuring Bainbridge Organic Vodka, Voyager Gin, and Pacific Rum with the usual splash of triple sec, sour mix and Coke.

Happy hour in the bar area is 3 to 6PM &  8PM-close every day with wines for $4.50, draft beer for $4 & noshes like the Salumi Plate for $6 and pizzas for $7. In the bar area you will find a big fireplace to cozy up to on those rainy nights in November! Do tell.

The Mill Creek location is the third Lombardi’s restaurant (other locations in Issaquah & Everett). Mother-daughter business team Diane Symms & Kerri Lonergan-Dreke are excited about the new location & meeting a whole new family of guests.

“As a locally-owned business for over 25 years, we are eager to get to know our new Mill Creek community, and maybe even see some familiar faces. We are proud of our commitment to delicious food, great wine and exceptional service, and hope to share our wonderful food and atmosphere for date nights, happy hours, birthdays, and other celebrations,” says Lonergan-Dreke.

Wanted: Volunteers for SnoCo Sheriff’s Office

It’s always fun when on my travels/errands through Mill Creek I find something new & interesting to share. New to me me, anyway. Hope for you as well. I was in Starbuck’s grabbing a little pick-me-up when I noticed a poster on the community bulletin board that reminded me of the old vintage “Uncle Sam – I want you!” posters. It was our very own Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick. And it turns out that he & his deputies are on the lookout for a few good volunteers!

There are several ways you might be able to use your talents & interests as a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Volunteer. The listings from the website include: Citizen Patrol – disabled parking enforcement, Park and Ride Lot patrol, stolen vehicle search & more, Project Lifesaver – provides electronic transmitter bracelets for vulnerable citizens who have a tendency to wander, Clerical & Data Processing – if you prefer to work in an office and Crime Prevention – programs/activities/events such as National Night Out, the Kid Care ID Program & Evergreen State Fair.

Visit the SnoCo Sheriff’s Office website for information & to read/download the application form. Once on the Home page, click on Recruiting tab, then on Volunteer from left side menu.

The application process is fully explained here. It’s a multi-step process & you’ll find it to be extremely thorough. Understand that as members of the Sheriff’s Office Team, volunteers will have access to Sheriff’s Office information & may hear/see confidential materials. Therefore, it is crucial that applicants are screened carefully. Do tell.

Other options are to email or call:
Director Ray Baron

I think it’s pretty cool that Snohomish County citizens can take the opportunity to give their time, talents & energy; to take an active role in making our community a better place to live, work & play.
