2011 Great Garden Awards

Members of the City of Mill Creek Art and Beautification Board announced their choices for the 2011 Great Garden Award. Fourteen residents of Mill Creek, representing 10 different divisions, were awarded for all the time and hard work they’ve put into their landscaping to create beauty on their property for all of us to behold.

Each winner was honored with a yard sign placed in their yard, and it will remain through the month of August. The City Council will then recognize these winners at the regular council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, September 6th 2011.

I had the chance to talk to Darby Hackett, the winning gardener from Douglas Fir, about her garden and the award. She said she was very surprised. “I didn’t think I would win anything like that. I am out there just about everyday. I do it for myself; I love working in the garden.” I asked if there was any particular inspiration or goal for her garden. Darby said, “If I am in the [garden] store and I just see something I like, that’s what I’ll add. I have a lot of geraniums and lobelia. If there’s some space available, I’ll plant something there. It is just what I see and what I like.” “I’m out in the garden every day weeding, fighting off the moles and a certain little rabbit that likes to nibble on the flowers. If I try to shoo him off he just looks at me, like what are YOU doing here?” Any other comments? “I was just so honored. There were only 14 people out of all the people in Mill Creek! It is a real honor.”

Darby, congratulations to you and all the other Mill Creek resident gardeners who were honored in this way. So many of us truly appreciate all the time and the tremendous amount of effort you put in to make your gardens beautiful and our city such a great place to call home.

Get organized! Shred Event

ClutterOnce again, Mayor Pro Tem Donna Michelson, along with the City Of Mill Creek, is pleased to bring Free Document Shredding Day to the community of Mill Creek! This is the perfect time to go through all those files, piles of paper on your desk or countertop, and boxes of old documents and clean out all the stuff you just don’t need to keep around. The great thing is that you won’t worry about your identity and private information going to who knows where, because Shred-it will shred it all, right on the spot. Do tell.

This event will take place on Saturday September 17, 2011 between 10am and 2pm at the Mill Creek City Hall located at 15728 Main Street in Mill Creek. This is a community event. You do not have to be a resident of Mill Creek. Everyone is welcome.

Not sure what to keep and what to shred? One great website I found is from Consumer Reports website. They have a pretty concise list of guidelines:  http://tinyurl.com/2djk45h  They use the term “toss”, but anything with sensitive/personal information should be be “shredded” to help prevent identity theft.

Also, while this is a free event, non-perishable food items will be collected at the same time and place. This is completely voluntary, but please consider bringing a contribution to help those in our community.

Kids’ Fun Run

Just saw this information about a great activity for kids from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. This Saturday August 13th the City of Mill Creek, along with generous local sponsors, will host a Kids’ Fun Run at Heatherwood Middle School Track & Field.

And it’s not just all fun, but will raise funds to support The American Red Cross. How cool is that? Registration begins at 9AM with the 1/2 mile run/walk starting at 10AM. The 5K run/walk will go off at 10:45 AM. Do tell.

National Night Out-America’s Night Out Against Crime

The 28th Annual National Night Out is tonight! — Tuesday, August 2nd and the Snohomish County County Executive Office, in partnership with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, is hosting a county-wide event at McCollum Pioneer Park from 5 to 8PM. Citizens are encouraged to turn on porch lights, lock their doors and come out to meet police, fire-fighters, civic leaders, non-profit groups and other community groups. There will be food, music by Trainwreck [a country band from Stanwood] booths and giveaways. McCollum Pioneer Park is located at 600 128th St. SE  Everett, WA

“This annual event is an excellent opportunity for families and individuals to learn how they can make our community a little safer,” said Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon. “It’s also a great chance to meet the women and men who work and serve in public safety.”

National Night Out is sponsored by National Association of Town Watch. It’s designed to heighten crime & drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit & police-community partnerships & send the message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized & fighting back. It grew out of a need to strengthen & build neighborhood “Block Watch” programs. Do tell.

Originally, National Night Out was observed by putting the lights on and keeping vigil on the front porch, but over the years neighborhoods, cities, whole communities have opted to observe the “night” by holding block parties, BBQs, inviting local police and sheriff departments to visit, hosting parades, exhibits, flashlight walks, contests and entertainment.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. Children’s Concerts

Beginning this week on Wednesday, July 27th the Mill Creek Library Park will provide the venue for the 2011 Mill Creek Summer Concert Series. These free concerts for children and their families will run on Wednesdays from 12-1 pm for the next 4 weeks.

These shows are co-spnsored by the Friends of the Mill Creek Library and the Mill Creek Parks and Recreation Department. And while this is called a concert series, don’t think of it as simply music. Over the course of the series there will be puppets, stories, stunts, skits, poetry, comedy, juggling, and opportunities for audience participation. Do tell.

The schedule:

  • Jul 27 — Buck and Elizabeth Cowboy/cowgirl themed musical experience.
  • Aug 3 — Eric Ode Music, stories, skits, poetry, props and puppets.
  • Aug 10 — Nancy Stewart National award-winning song writer and performer.
  • Aug 17 — Alex Zebre Family friendly entertainment including high energy comedy, stunts, juggling and audience participation.
Parking is available in the library parking lot & on the North side of the street off 156th St SE in Mill Creek, or you may use the lot near Azteca Restaurant across the Bothell-Everett Highway from the library. Help Shape Mill Creek’s Future

STRATEGIC PLAN: Creating Our Vision for Mill Creek’s Future.

The City of Mill Creek is hosting an Open House Monday, July 18th from 5-7PM at the City Hall Annex — 15720 Main Street Mill Creek, WA 98012

The City is looking for input from citizens to help create a Strategic Plan for Mill Creek that will set priorities and guide decision making in the future. Do tell.

Questions to ponder: What City services are the most important to you? What park or trail projects are planned in the near future? Have you always wanted to know where your tax dollars go? [Well, yes!] The City is looking for interested, engaged citizens of Mill Creek to be involved in answering these and other questions. City staff will be there to listen to your ideas and to answer questions.

There will be prizes, refreshments & a Kid’s Activity Area to keep your children entertained while you visit the open house.

Providence Medical-Festival Title Sponsor

Providence Regional Medical Center of Everett is the Title sponsor of this year’s Mill Creek Festival and Street Fair. As such, they will be highly visible during the event held this this weekend – July 16th and 17th –  in Mill Creek.

Covering 6 booths, representatives from Providence will be on hand to answer questions and offer information about all the services, features and ammenities offered by the Providence Regional Medical Center including the new innovative  Marshall and Katherine Cymbaluk Medical Tower which opened June 14th.

Mill Creek Festival

Make plans to have fun this weekend with family and friends. Attend the annual Mill Creek Festival and Street Fair presented by The Mill Creek Business Association, Providence Regional Medical in Everett & North Creek Roofing. This year the festival runs Saturday July 16th and Sunday July 17th beginning at 11AM.

Parking should be a breeze this year because of the free shuttle service running continuously [ 7AM to 7PM on Saturday & 10AM to 6PM on Sunday ] between the parking lot at Jackson High School and the North end of the Mill Creek Festival site.

Highlights include favorites such as the Pet Plaza, the Kids Korner, Arts & Crafts, Main Stage and Community Stage entertainment, Beer Garden, non-profit and commercial booths. There will be food booths in addition to the many dining options throughout Mill Creek.

Returning this year after being sorely missed last year is a car show! This year the Rod-Tiques — a Premier Northwest car club, will produce the classic car event for the festival. While in the past festival car shows have featured Chevrolet Corvettes or Ford Mustangs, Rod-Tiques open their shows to any special interest auto. Car enthusiasts can expect to see just about anything, from wild customs to lovingly restored models from the 40’s through the 60’s at their showroom best. Car show is Sunday July 17 8AM-4PM.

Music Mid-Week

As we all know, Summer in Western Washington begins not on June 21st, but on July 5th! So it’s only fitting that the Music Mid-Week in Mill Creek Summer Concert Series should begin on July 6th.

This popular concert series is back thanks to the generous donations from North Creek Roofing, Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Windermere Real Estate, Windermere Mortgage Services, Azul, Central Market, City of Mill Creek, Rotary of Mill Creek and Mill Creek Business Association. Run of the Mill 5K

Are you registered? Got the good shoes? Are you warmed up? What are you waiting for? Get ready for the 26th Annual Columbia Funding Mortgage Run of the Mill 5K to be held on Saturday July 9th. The event will take place in Mill Creek Town Center located at 15418 Main Street, Mill Creek, WA 98012. It’s hard to believe that the Mill Creek community has been the scene of this popular 5K Run for 26 years. Where do the years go?  Steve Knox, owner of Columbia Funding Mortgage, stepped in to organize and sponsor the Run of the Mill in 2006 when the previous organizer was ready to pass the torch. He solicited support from the running community, and with help from some amazing UW student-athletes, the Run of the Mill took on a new life as a charitable event.

Steve and wife, Linda have been the driving force behind this event with the help of hundreds of volunteers, many wonderful community sponsors, and thousands of runners.

Last year $43,500 was raised for the Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund and local high school running programs and scholarships. This year, the fundraising goal has been more than doubled to $100,000 all to support local people battling cancer and to support other local charities that provide hope and make a difference in people’s lives. In addition, funds will go to youth sports. It is the desire of organizers to encourage youth in our community to participate in sports, and in doing so,  encourage them to develop a  lifelong active and healthy lifestyle. Do tell.

Additional things to remember: 100% of entry fees go to charity, there are great prizes, Mill Creek is a beautiful place to run, it’s kid friendly, and there are great restaurants and shops to visit after your race.
