Two More Seek Re-Election to MC Council

First off, Bart (Tim) Masterson, The Pointe, has filed for re-election to the Mill Creek City Council.  During the economic turmoil of the last four years, he has concentrated on the City’s fiscal soundness by advocating for tactical expense trimming & Masterson,Bart2careful spending rather than drastic service cutting measures.  As a result, our financial reserves have remained strong and service levels high. Working on and supporting the MC Police Department’s strategic plan for enhancing staffing levels and command structure has helped make an even stronger police force. Masterson’s two year intensive evaluation of a proposed costly Regional Fire Authority resulted in the City’s choosing instead to strengthen our contractual relationship for emergency services with Fire District 7. A priority for Masterson is the development of our last suitable commercial area known as the East Gateway Urban Village. Says Masterson; “Our fiscal sustainability depends on it. Moreover, I am an advocate for the adopted Strategic Plan for the city; a plan that presents a longer term pathway for maintaining the integrity, livability and sustainability of Mill Creek in the future. It has been an exciting four years and I would like to participate in the next four.”

Lynn Sordel is fourth current Mill Creek Council member to announce plans to seek re-election.  Sordel was appointed by vote of the Council in November 2012 to fill Position 1 which had been vacated by Terry Ryan. This appointment will end in November 2014. Thus, Mr. Sordel will seek a full four-year term by vote of the people this coming election season. Do tell.

 

Garage Sale

garageSign13Don’t forget! The Semi-Annual Mill Creek Garage Sale is this Saturday only -May 4th. This much anticipated, city-wide garage sale runs from approximately 8AM (depends on the individual sellers) until the garage doors are closed. From all reports, it looks like the weather — low of 53° & a high of 76° — is going to behave & will be perfect for a stroll through the neighborhoods of Mill Creek & some outdoor shopping.

In addition, a truck from Goodwill Industries will be parked in the Mill Creek Community Association lot across from the Mill Creek Golf Club, to take all those treasures that don’t sell and/or you wish to donate instead. Do tell.

Kathy Nielsen Seeks Re-Election to Mill Creek City Council

Kathy Nielsen_headshot_reduced size_Jan 2013Mayor Pro Tem, Kathy Nielsen has officially announced that she will be seeking another term for the Mill Creek City Council.  Nielsen previously served on the council from 1990 – 1998, with two years as Mayor, returning to the council in 2010. Nielsen served during the planning stages of the Town Center, and she is a strong advocate for parks & community events. Do tell.

“This has been my home for 33 years, and I care about maintaining the character of our city.  The Council has had to face some tough decisions to keep our city financially viable.  I believe there is still more to be accomplished.  Maintaining the quality of life, appearance and our reputation as a family friendly city with high standards will continue to strengthen our property values.  I have been a strong supporter of our police department & will continue to focus on these basic services while also being accountable for every dollar the city spends.  Citizens have chosen to call Mill Creek their home because of the quality of life it provides.”

Donna Michelson Seeks Re-election to Mill Creek City Council

DMichelsonDonna Michelson has announced she plans to file for re-election for her position on the Mill Creek City Council.  Michelson has been a councilmember since 1999, serving 2 years as Mayor & 4 years as Mayor Pro-Tem. Do tell.

“I am honored to have been part of the council serving the residents of Mill Creek.  If re-elected, I will continue to listen & address the concerns and issues of the citizenry & our businesses.  I believe experience & history will be critical given the challenges of competing needs during this economic environment.”

She stated it is her goal to preserve Mill Creek as the best city to live, work, shop & play.  Michelson also wants to continue the community events she has introduced to the city – Document/Paper Shredding Events, Household Hazardous Roundup, Electronic Recycling and free Micro-Chipping of pets.

Michelson retired from private industry & has enjoyed living in Mill Creek for 34 years where she & her husband Bruce have raised two children.

Got Drugs?

GotDrugslogoThe National Take Back Initiative of the U.S Department of Justice,  Drug Enforcement Administration is holding their 6th National Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday April 27th. The best drop off location for Mill Creek is the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office – South Precinct from 9Am – 1PM. That’s at 15928 Mill Creek Blvd. in Mill Creek, WA 98012.  Yay!

This is a great opportunity to clean out that medicine cabinet, nightstand or kitchen cabinet & dispose of expired & unused medicines. This is also the safest way to dispose of old medicines. They should never be thrown in the garbage or flushed down the toilet because the chemicals may harm the environment as they enter the sewer, septic systems & land fills. Do tell.

Beside the potential impact on the environment unused, expired, or unwanted meds contribute to the risk of accidental poisoning. Unwanted or no longer needed drugs that are just sitting on the shelf could get into the hands of people they were not intended for, children & teens, perhaps.

Most pharmacies & police departments in Snohomish County collect unwanted drugs all year around. However, only police departments may accept controlled substances or narcotics, for example: Oxycontin.

So, take this great opportunity to do a little spring cleaning & get rid of those unwanted meds, responsibly, this Saturday morning.

Four Mill Creek City Council Posts Up For Election

The following four Mill Creek City Council seats are up for election this year:

  • Position #1 – Short & Four year term
  • Position #2 – Four year term
  • Position #3 – Four year term
  • Position #4 – Four year term

The City of Mill Creek is a Council-Manager form of government.  This means that all legislative policy-making powers are vested in the City Council.  The Council appoints a City Manager to carry out the legislative policies the Council develops.  The City Manager is the head of the executive branch of City government. Do tell.

In general, it is the Council’s role to make policy for the governance of the City & its citizens.  The Council has the power to enact laws & policies consistent with state law, usually through the enactment of ordinances & resolutions.

The Council holds meetings on the first, second & fourth Tuesday of every month at Mill Creek City Hall, beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Council members also participate in various committees & boards.

The filing period for these positions is May 13-17.  The filing fee is $60.00.   Any Mill Creek citizen interested in running for a seat on the Mill Creek City Council may call the Snohomish County Auditors Office at 425-388-3444 for more information on filing.  For information related to the duties of the position, please contact Kelly Chelin, Mill Creek City Clerk, at 425-745-1891.

West Coast Aquatics to Hold Swim-A-Thon

On Saturday, May 4, 2013 the swimmers of the WEST Coast Aquatics swim team, located in Mill Creek, will be holding an official Swim-a-Thon.

During the Swim-a-Thon, these competitive swimmers, who range in age from 7 to 17, will swim for 2 hours or up to 200 lengths of their pool, that’s 3 miles! And they hope to raise $50,000.00!

Swim-A-Thon is a nationwide program, with 5% of the money raised going to support national swimming programs, such as Make a Splash, through the USA Swimming Foundation.

WEST provides a safe and positive environment for all levels of swimming from beginner to national-level competitive swimming. Swimmers as young as 3-years-old can learn the basics of swimming & water safety,  progress through the WEST Swim School to pre-team & then onto the competitive team. Do tell.

The pool is also used by a water aerobics group and a synchronized swimming team. Each summer kids from the community enjoy the fun and activity of the Summer Swim Team. In the fall and winter, Jackson & Archbishop Murphy High School swim teams practice at WEST. Zumba classes, personal training, and swim team dryland workouts take place in the gym.

Reaching the $50,000.00 fundraising goal will allow WEST to cover facility maintenance costs & remodel the locker rooms. And with all the traffic the locker rooms see on a daily basis, this remodel will benefit all who use the facility. Please help WEST’s swim team surpass their goal!

Call For Artists for 2013 Mill Creek Art Walk

artwalkphotoCalling all artists who want to participate in the Mill Creek Town Center Second Thursday Art Walk, presented by the Mill Creek Art and Beautification Board & the Mill Creek Town Center Business Association. The 2013 Art Walk will be held 5 – 8PM on June 13July 11August 8 & September 12. The 2012 Art Walk was well attended & resulted in many positive comments from participating artists and merchants.

The goal of the Art Walk is to enhance the atmosphere of Mill Creek Town Center while providing artists with a venue in which to showcase their work. We attempt to match the style of the artist’s work with the host merchant’s preferences. Artists will not be charged fees or commissions.

Artists interested in exhibiting & selling their work are encouraged to apply. All entries will be juried. To be considered for the June 13th date, please apply by May 1.

New Kiwanis Club Being Organized in Mill Creek

PNWGroupLogo3Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International, working in concert with citizens of Snohomish County, is forming a Kiwanis Club of Mill Creek. The aim of the new club is to serve the needs of children in Mill Creek & Snohomish County as well as to meet other needs in the community, develop youth leaders, & provide opportunities for leadership, business & social fellowship.

The first pre-organizational meeting will be held in on April 23, 2013, Tuesday, at Volunteers of America, 16300 Motor Place, Lynnwood, WA 98037. The meeting is expected to be held from 7-8PM. Citizens, 18 years or over, interested in improving the community & helping meet the needs of children are welcome to attend the meeting & to become Charter Members of the new Kiwanis Club of Mill Creek. The club is expected to be chartered in May. Mid-term Vacancy on Design Review Board to Be Filled

The City of Mill Creek is seeking one volunteer to fill a mid-term vacancy on the Design Review Board, with a term that expires on August 31, 2015.

Design Review Board meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 5:15 p.m.

The Design Review Board was created to review & make urban design decisions that will promote visual quality throughout the City.  The Design Review Board reviews all site plans, building elevations, landscaping & monument signs for attached single-family residential, multifamily residential, industrial, and commercial developments. Do tell.

The Board Members shall be from the professions of architecture, landscape architecture, urban (design) planner or similar disciplines & need not be residents of the City.
