Run of the Mill 5K

Are you registered? Got the good shoes? Are you warmed up? What are you waiting for? Get ready for the 26th Annual Columbia Funding Mortgage Run of the Mill 5K to be held on Saturday July 9th. The event will take place in Mill Creek Town Center located at 15418 Main Street, Mill Creek, WA 98012. There will be free parking offsite and shuttle service to & from located at McCollum Park Park & Ride. For complete information and online registration visit:  www.mcrunofthemill.com

It’s hard to believe that the Mill Creek community has been the scene of this popular 5K Run for 26 years. Where do the years go?  Steve Knox, owner of Columbia Funding Mortgage, stepped in to organize and sponsor the Run of the Mill in 2006 when the previous organizer was ready to pass the torch. He solicited support from the running community, and with help from some amazing UW student-athletes, the Run of the Mill took on a new life as a charitable event.

Steve and wife, Linda have been the driving force behind this event with the help of hundreds of volunteers, many wonderful community sponsors, and thousands of runners.

Speaking of volunteers, maybe you don’t want to run or walk, but you would like to participate. Many volunteers are needed. Contact Volunteer Coordinator, Liz Frederickson at lizfrederickson@gmail.com

Last year $43,500 was raised for the Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund and local high school running programs and scholarships. This year, the fundraising goal has been more than doubled to $100,000 all to support local people battling cancer and to support other local charities that provide hope and make a difference in people’s lives. In addition, funds will go to youth sports. It is the desire of organizers to encourage youth in our community to participate in sports, and in doing so,  encourage them to develop a  lifelong active and healthy lifestyle. Do tell.

Additional things to remember: 100% of entry fees go to charity, there are great prizes, Mill Creek is a beautiful place to run, it’s kid friendly, and there are great restaurants and shops to visit after your race.

Superhero in the Parks

Mill Creek Parks and Recreation has come up with a great way to get Mill Creek Residents out to discover & visit all the parks in the City. They are launching The Hunt for Mill Creek’s Superhero on June 27, 2011.

Each week for 6 weeks, an 8½ X 11 photo of the aforementioned Superhero [He’s wearing a bright blue jumpsuit with red boots and red/white trim] will be placed at each of the parks, one each week. It will be hidden, but shouldn’t be too difficult to find. You will find clues to the park of the week and a map of all the parks on the city website to help you. www.cityofmillcreek.com

So what you do is, you find and visit the park of the week, find the Superhero photo, take a picture of yourself with the photo and email it along with your name and address to: parksandrec@cityofmillcreek.com

Each week that you send in a photo of yourself with Superhero, your name will be entered into a drawing for prizes to be given out beginning July 6th. To give you a head start, the first clue is: “A bookworm would like this park!”

This contest is open to Mill Creek Residents Only. Sounds like a fun activity for young & old and is a good way to discover parts of Mill Creek you’ve never been to or haven’t visited in a while. Do tell.

The Lonely Polygamist @ Main St Book Club

You still have time to pick up a copy and read! Next Wednesday, June 22nd, the Main Street Book Club, hosted by Amanda Corr and the University Bookstore – Mill Creek, will meet to discuss The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall.

Below is an excerpt from a description of the novel from publisher, W.W. Norton and Company:

“Golden Richards, husband to four wives, father to twenty-eight children, is having the mother of all midlife crises. His construction business is failing, his family has grown into an overpopulated mini-dukedom beset with insurrection and rivalry, and he is done in with grief: due to the accidental death of a daughter and the stillbirth of a son, he has come to doubt the capacity of his own heart. Brady Udall, one of our finest American fiction writers, tells a tragicomic story of a deeply faithful man who, crippled by grief and the demands of work and family, becomes entangled in an affair that threatens to destroy his family’s future. Like John Irving and Richard Yates, Udall creates characters that engage us to the fullest as they grapple with the nature of need, love, and belonging.

Beautifully written, keenly observed, and ultimately redemptive, The Lonely Polygamist is an unforgettable story of an American family-with its inevitable dysfunctionality, heartbreak, and comedy-pushed to its outer limits.” Do tell.   www.wwnorton.com

The Main Street Book Club meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:30PM, and when you purchase a copy of the selection of the month at the Mill Creek store you will receive 20% off the list price.
